Rode to Ely & Silver Bay, MN., which I decided to delay from yesterdays trip due to the overcast conditions. I wanted to get some pictures of the area in the sunlight and took a gamble that today would provide better weather. I got lucky and the weather gods relented, but it added a couple of hours to my trip log for the day.
I had my first "Kamikaze" deer jump out in front of me near Ely, MN. Luckily my brake reactions were quick enough to prevent any mishap. The road from Ely south to Silver Bay, MN is just spectacular. Forested beautiful curvy roads wind up and down thru the woods. Cell phone service is lacking though because it is too far in the sticks. That is only a minor annoyance and this stretch of road is highly endorsed by me, myself & I. We all liked it very much.
Got to see Split Rock Lighthouse along the shore of Lake Superior. Then a few miles towards Duluth, is Gooseberry Falls State Park, which is a good place to take a break & get some pictures.
I headed on towards Watertown, SD to see my friend Lee. He and I have communicated via the internet for about 4 years, but I had never seen him in person, so I was really looking forward to this evening. It just happened to be his birthday too. He and his gracious wife let me stay at their home, which is always better than booking a room at a strange motel. Lots of farm land, barns and crops are seen on the way to Watertown, SD. It has it's own scenic beauty, but Lee is a little frustrated that there aren't more corners or elevations near his home. He is Mr Motorcycle though and can easily ride to some other place for other riding pleasure. He has won several awards from the motorcycling community and built the first sidecar hack to ever ride 3 people on an official SS1K which means riding for over 1000 miles in less than 24 hours.
Cumulative motorcycle return waves today: 350
